Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is explaining the fundamentals of relationships. And for once, the movies are getting it right. Let’s start with the irrational robot sister…
1.
Nebula was almost a throw-away character—angry, irrational, just there to fight. Then, we realize flesh had to be removed before her robot parts could be integrated. Ouch.
Lesson 1: Even your “robot” sister has feelings. And the relationship changes when you humanize her.
2.
Mantis, trying to save the world: “We need to talk!”
Drax: “I’m sorry. But I like a woman with some meat on her bones.” Before they can save the world, Mantis has to convince Drax she’s not talking about sex.
Lesson 2: Listen. Your friend is talking about more than you and sex.
3.
“I don’t use my head to fly the arrow, I use my heart,” Yondu said.
Ego used his head. And made a tumor in his love’s brain. Quill used his heart. And he made a Pac-Man that saved those he loved.
Lesson 3: Use your heart. When only ego leads, you get lonely, then eaten by Pac-Man.
4.
Rocket was an experiment. Nebula was a project. Yondu was abandoned. And boy that gave them some terrible relationship skills.
But Rocket retained friends. Nebula regained a sister. Yondu rebuilt honor.
Lesson 4: Despite broken brains, limbs, and DNA, relationships can be repaired.
